Cups for Drinking Together, 2022-present, asks participants to focus on their partner and participate in a shared activity. To use these “double cups,” participants must drink with each other simultaneously through the shared object. They synchronize their speed of drinking while closely checking in with each other. Nonverbal cues are key.
The piece is composed of two handbuilt cups joined together by a handle of clay. The handles in between differ in length. In some shorter-handled forms, you must stand as close to your partner as you would on a crowded subway. Other handles are almost the length of an average arm. The shorter the handle, the more intimate, and the longer the handle the sillier the interaction--people must balance their beverages more precariously. One participant said “it was the closest I have ever been to someone without kissing them.”
